Voices From HIMSS: Privacy Imperative in Health Care IT

“The fact that the nation’s current electronic health systems are designed for rampant illegal and unethical data theft is now crystal clear.
Longitudinal health and claims records are data mined and sold by the Blue Health Initiative and Thomson Medstat. IMS Health, a prescription data miner that sells Americans’ prescription records, reported revenue of $2 billion in 2006. Hospitals sell our health information, and personal health record and electronic health record vendors sell our data to pay for the technology. Every business that touches personal health information can steal and sell it because HIPAA legalized these onward transfers and secondary uses of personal health information without informed consent.”
