Telemedicine closes gaps in Lehigh Valley doctoring

“To see a endocrinologist like Bhatt, who specializes in treating patients with diabetes, Paslawsky would have had to drive more than two hours round trip. But with telemedicine — now available at St. Luke’s-Miners Memorial Hospital where Paslawsky is a patient — he can see a specialist without traveling far from his hometown in Schuylkill County.
The technology, which allows doctors to examine patients remotely through a desktop videoconferencing system, was showcased by St. Luke’s on Tuesday for the annual American Diabetes Alert Day. With 23.6 million people, or 8 percent of the population nationwide diagnosed with diabetes, there is a growing need for endocrinologists, according to The Endocrine Society.”
