Out of Africa – a New Mobile Health Model

“SIMpill by name and simple by nature, most people who are tracking the use mobile phone technology in healthcare will be aware of this SMS based medication compliance monitoring device.
In the UK medication compliance has been in news recently as cases where mentally ill patients have omitted to take medicines prescribed to control their schizophrenia had tragic consequences. While wireless pill boxes are seen as offering a solution to the problem of non-compliance this is not what the original users of SIMpill had in mind when they deployed the product. Doctors in Africa saw the ability to track their patient’s medication use as a marketing opportunity – contacting a patient who had recently finished a course medication with a view to selling them more drugs.”
