On Aug. 18, 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services announced the proposal of a regulation that would replace the outdated coding system known as ICD-9-CM, the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification. The final rule was posted on Jan. 16 and calls for a switchover to the next generation of codes, ICD-10-CM, to take effect on Oct. 1, 2013.”
