Changing Role of Nurses in the Digital Era: Nurses and Telehealth

Being the largest contingent of the healthcare workforce engaging in diverse care activities, nurses play a very important role in the health care sector. However, the shortage of nursing population has posed serious challenges to the nursing services. Both developed and developing countries are facing a critical shortage of nurses. Mal-distribution of nurses has contributed to the disparity of care. The emergence of new diseases, rapid increase of chronic diseases and the growth of aged population have aggravated the problem. The challenges have demanded a review of the way care services are traditionally provided. Nurses have shown a remarkable flexibility and adaptability amidst these challenges. Nurses are among the first groups to embrace telehealth to provide care. This chapter provides an overview of the current practice of telenursing. The discussion will also include the advantages and the barriers to the expansion of telenursing.
