“Health agencies and institutions — from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to many area hospitals — are turning up on the Internet in the same places you would expect to find Ashton Kutcher, Mafia Wars, cousin Vera and viral videos of babies dancing to “Single Ladies.”
“It’s been a pretty heavy year of using social media for risk communications,” said Fred Smith of the CDC, which uses such tools as YouTube, Twitter and text messaging to alert the public about health threats, ranging from swine flu to salmonella.”
