Responding to the skepticism in Missouri

“Missouri’s nickname is the “Show-Me State,” which supposedly is attributed to a state representative and exemplifies a stubbornness and devotion to simple common sense. I thought about the state nickname and what it means as I read an article in the Columbia Missourian yesterday about state legislators praising and condemning EHRs. I thought it was a good time to appeal to a little “show-me” common sense.
The article talked about how the value of EHRs is in their interoperability, or ability for disparate systems to communicate and exchange patient data. The knock was that it’s too expensive to implement interfaces. I don’t doubt that there are expensive interface solutions out in the market, but I also know there are inexpensive ways of connecting disparate EHR systems without a lot of hardware and sweat.”
