Telemedicine: Avoiding the pitfalls

“There is no doubt that telemedicine can help to solve some of the pressing problems facing modern healthcare systems. But what is the best way to implement telemedicine? At the European eHealth Conference in Barcelona, experts from different medical specialties shared their experiences.
Lluis Donoso, member of the executive council of the European Society of Radiology, said that right now, teleradiology was clearly the most extensively used telemedicine application of all. “We have been using teleradiology in Europe for more than ten years already, and it is often very helpful,” Donoso said. In remote areas, teleradiology allows otherwise unavailable radiological expertise to be tapped into. It also helps to increase diagnostic accuracy, especially in patients with complex images. And it helps to avoid unnecessary patient transfers, because experts are able to crosscheck images before a patient is referred, for example, to a tertiary care centre.”
