The internet has penetrated society to a very significant degree. Some ninety per cent of Dutch households are now ‘online’. Over the past ten years, people have taken to using the internet to find all sorts of information, including that relating to health and healthcare. For anyone with a health problem, the first step will often be to ‘ask Dr Google’. Almost one third of internet users report that they ‘always or generally’ use the internet to find relevant information before they contact their own general practitioner, while a quarter do so on their return from the doctor’s
surgery.
