New study on CPOE shows decrease in mortality

“Computerized Physician Order Entry systems (CPOE) is one of the elements of Meaningful Use, allowing physicians access to HITECH/ARRA stimulus incentive money beginning in 2011. The benefit of such systems in “bending the curve” of healthcare cost inflation has been documented, and was one of the motivators for including this criterion in Meaningful Use as well as in HHS Certification of Electronic Health Records (EHRs).
Recently, a study published in the journal Pediatrics showed an actual decrease in mortality resulting from implementation of a CPOE system at Stanford University’s Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital (a tertiary-level referral teaching hospital). The study showed a 20% decrease in mortality rate after their CPOE system was introduced in 2007.”
