“The incorporation of technology into the U.S. health care system — specifically through the use of electronic health records — has the potential to optimize the management of medical information and possibly increase the secure sharing of information between health care providers and consumers.
Financial incentives, including the availability of $20 billion in federal stimulus money to incentivize the conversion from paper to electronic files and increased Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements for medical providers that establish “meaningful use” of electronic health records (EHRs), have further spurred the conversion from paper to electronic records by health care practices and facilities.”
