“If you’re looking for studies laying out the benefits of electronic medical records, this isn’t your month. Last week we wrote about a review of existing research that found little evidence for some of the claims made about health IT.
And a study published online yesterday in the Archives of Internal Medicine comes to a similar conclusion. This one looked at data from outpatient medical visits at nonfederal offices and hospitals between 2005 and 2007 to see how electronic health records correlated with 20 quality indicators. The findings are pretty stark: there was “no consistent association between” better quality of care and electronic medical records or a specific IT tool, clinical decision support.”
