Second it seems that there has been pretty intense resistance to many clinical applications from the clinicians who are expected to use the software.

“There’s little question that electronic health records reduce adverse drug events and improve quality of care. But that doesn’t mean healthcare providers shouldn’t be doing all they can to make sure they’re as safe and as easy to use as possible, said National Coordinator for Health Information Technology David Blumenthal, MD.

“If you follow industry business, you know that smartphones are taking health and healthcare by a storm. Whether it is doctors and nurses using smartphones to access clinical information at the bedside or consumers downloading the coolest new app for dieting or fitness, it is hard to imagine how anyone does anything without being tethered to a phone these days.

“Electronic medical records, also known as EHRs, often touted as a powerful antidote for uncoordinated and ineffective medical care, do little to help patients outside the hospital, according to a new study.
Researchers from Stanford University analyzed federal data on more than 255,000 patients, about a third of whom had health information carried electronically. The researchers compared the care of those patients to the care of patients without EHRs, on 20 different measures of quality – for example, whether proper medication was prescribed for patients with asthma or simple infections, or whether smokers were counseled on ways to quit.

“Electronic health records — touted by the White House as a key way to improve healthcare in the United States — may actually do little to improve quality, U.S. researchers said on Monday.
A team from Stanford University in California analyzed nationwide survey data from more than 250,000 visits to physicians’ offices and other outpatient settings between 2005 and 2007.

Background
Electronic health records (EHRs) are increasingly used by US outpatient physicians. They could improve clinical care via clinical decision support (CDS) and electronic guideline-based reminders and alerts. Using nationally representative data, we tested the hypothesis that a higher quality of care would be associated with EHRs and CDS.

“The terms “robotics” and “artificial intelligence” have been bandied about for quite some time now, and we’ve seen the advances that have been made in robotics technology and applied successfully in various industries. The world of medicine however, was lagging behind – when lives are at stake, perhaps human intuition was considered superior to robotic efficiency.
