News from another country: “We believe in health IT”

“The address by US Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference in Orlando, Florida, [daily reports here] ought to be compulsory reading for Australia’s federal and state politicians – and for that matter the committed critics and vested interests that consistently undermine ehealth progress in Australia.
“We believe in health IT because it’s an investment in a stronger economy” and understand its “huge job-creating potential,” Sebelius said. Describing it as “one of those issues where Democrats and Republicans stand together” , she said that although the Obama administration had proposed hundreds of billions of dollars in budget cuts, the administration realised “it’s equally important to keep the investments that will keep our economy growing” and to improve the health of the nation.”
