“However, unified identity management is a complex problem and, the only way to really tackle this issue is to boil it down to the essential elements required for complying with the regulations.
Two critical elements are encryption and authentication. In health care, we collaborate. We share health care records with providers, health plans and sometimes the government (for public health surveillance). It’s very important that in all of these cases we secure the information, and it’s good to know we can do that with authentication and encryption methods that comply with the FIPS-140-2 standards specified in the HITECH Act. We can ensure that whether data is in motion or at rest, it’s protected, and we can and should authenticate everyone who comes in contact with that data.”
