Detailed Coding, EHR Analysis Superior in ID’ing CHD, Heart Failure

“A recent peer-reviewed article in Preventing Chronic Disease, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that an EHR-analyzing algorithm that went beyond parsing four-digit ICD-9 data was markedly superior to analysis based solely on those entries.
The study was designed to identify and accurately categorize acute coronary heart disease and heart failure events using exclusively electronic health record data. Using EHR data alone to accurately categorize disease would allow the medical record to be used as a cardiovascular surveillance tool, and eliminate the need for manual medical record review.”
