High quality information for all health care areas: DIMDI – the German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information – was founded in 1969 and is an institute within the scope of the German Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). DIMDI’s main task is to provide information in all fields of the life sciences to the interested public.DIMDI is publisher of official medical classifications such as ICD-10-GM and OPS (German procedure classification) and maintains medical terminologies, thesauri, nomenclatures and catalogues of different healthcare domains (e.g. MeSH, ATC, UMDNS, Alpha-ID, LOINC, OID) that are important for health telematics and other applications. Some of the challenges to be addressed are analyse the applicability of advanced engineering approaches and methods at all levels (tools for semantic interoperability), create a common sense of semantics (Workinggroups with all stakeholders), thorough analysis done before design, carve out a standard for specific projects based on generic results and give advise to implement semantic standards in the heterogeneous field of healthcare.
