C. Peter Waegemann is the Vice President of mHealth Initiative Inc., a Boston-based not-for-profit organization promoting mHealth applications nationally and internationally.
Until February 2009 he was CEO of the Medical Records Institute, a Boston-based organization involved in applied research and functioning as an educational clearinghouse, as well as also the Executive Director of Center for Cell Phone Applications in HealthCare (C-PAHC).
Since the 1980s, he has been a visionary and promoter of electronic medical record systems (EMRs). Twenty-five years ago, he started the annual conference Toward an Electronic Patient Record (TEPR) that draws each year several thousand attendees. Waegemann defined EMRs, PHRs, and EHRs. Seven years ago, Waegemann became convinced that cell phones will become a major tool in healthcare and he is the former chair of MoHCA, the Mobile Healthcare Alliance.
He is considered an international leader in medical informatics with a special interest in electronic patient record systems, standards, networking, telemedicine, and the creation of the national information infrastructure. He is the most sought-after speaker on electronic health records, e-Health, and m-Health. In 2007, Waegemann was cited as one of 20 outstanding people who make healthcare better (HealthLeaders).

Professor Andrew Marsh, with a PhD in Computer Science (AI), has been the author of two UK government commission reports and of over 160 peer reviewed research publications on Health Informatics including 1 book, 9 chapters and 8 editorials.
Professor Marsh has founded a number of pioneering academic and industrial research groups, has experience in managing large-scale projects and has founded two successful spin-off companies. In 2004, Professor Marsh become Vice-President of the ICMCC (International Council on Medical Care and Compunetics) and since 2006 is a visiting professor at the University of Westminster.
In 2007, Professor Marsh co-founded HoIP (Healthcare over Internet Protocol) a community interest company promoting an alliance of academia, industry, policy makers and consumers to develop an open framework for interoperable health services. In September 2009, Professor Marsh was appointed Secretary General of World Academy of BioMedical Sciences and Technologies (WABT) a UNESCO NGO. He is also a recognised expert for UK CfH, ESA, REA, EACEA and the CEC since FP4 with over 50 project reviews. His current interests are in Future Internet Technologies and their application to Health, Wellbeing and care.

Prof. Dr. med. Björn Bergh is Chairman – Center of Information Technology and Medical Engineering, Full Professor for Medical Information Systems – University Hospital and Medical Faculty Heidelberg, Germany.
Björn studied medicine and mathematics and concluded an education in Diagnostic Radiology at the Charité University Hospital Berlin where he also headed the Digital Radiology unit until 1998. From 1999 until 2003 he was acting CIO of the University Hospital Frankfurt.
Today Björn is Professor for Medical Information Systems and Chairman of the Centre of Information Technology and Medical Engineering at the University Hospital and Medical Faculty Heidelberg. He obtained various public and private job offers including an appointment as the first Professor and Chairman of the Health Informatics Center at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
He is Consultant Editor of “Hospital IT Europe”, active in 7 professional/scientific societies, member of various boards (e.g. HIMSS Europe, ConHIT, TeleMed, MEDICA media, Open eHealth Foundation) and conducted various advisory assignments (e.g. National Centre for Coordination of e-Health (NCCEH) Sweden, German Research Society, German Hospital Association, Agfa, GE, Microsoft, Hamad Medical Corporation Qatar). Björn was speaker of the “German Association of University Hospital CIOs” for 4 years and obtained the TELEMED Award 2008 for the Heidelberg eHealth project. He is author of 48 publications and 91 invited presentations or key notes and was involved in nine EU and two G7/8 R&D projects.

Adrie C.M. Dumay received a B.Sc, M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree from the Delft University of Technology in the field of Information and Communication Theory in 1984, 1986 and 1992 respectively and an MBA cum laude from the Teesside Business School in 1997.
He has been appointed scientist and product development manager at the Delft University of Technology, Erasmus Medical Centre Rotterdam and the Leiden University Medical Centre. Since 1993 he was appointed in several management positions at TNO Physics and Electronics Laboratory with R&D responsibility on modelling and simulation, visualisation and virtual reality and applications in the medical, space and business services domain. He was the initiator and manager of the Virtualty Lab TNO.
At present he is Research Director, programming R&D projects at TNO to innovate healthcare. Dr. Dumay is author of over 60 reviewed scientific papers, member of several scientific committees.

Laura M. Roa was born in Cádiz, Spain. She received the Ph.D degree (cum laude) from the University of Seville, Spain, in 1980. She is Titular Professor of Systems and Automatics Engineering at the University of Seville. In 1988, she founded the Biomedical Engineering Research Group at the University of Seville, which she is in charge of.
She has been author of more than 160 papers, and has directed different Ph.D Thesis and projects funded by various public Spanish organizations and private companies. The research topics link different disciplines, including physiology, mathematical modeling, systems engineering and integration of information technologies. Her research activities have covered development of mathematical models for complex physiological systems, the design of intelligent algorithms for clinical applications, dosing the therapies for burn and renal patients using optimal control techniques, and information technologies and communications applied to telemedicine, homecare technologies and acessibility for elderly and disabled people.
Dr. Roa is a Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), Fellow of the Intenational Academy for Medical and Biological Engineering Sciences (IAMBES) and a member of the Royal Medical Academy of Seville, Spain. She currently serves as President of the Spanish Biomedical Engineering Society (SEIB), and Representative of Europe Region in the Administrative Council of the IEEE-EMBS. She is member of the Advisory Board of the IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine.

Joachim Nagel received his Diploma in Physics from the University of the Saarland in 1974 and his D.Sc. in Medical Engineering Physics from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1979. Following appointments in industry and as a faculty member at the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg, he joined the University of Miami, Florida, USA, in 1986, where he served as a Professor of Biomedical Engineering (1986-96), Professor of Radiology (1990-96), and Professor of Psychophysiology (1988-96), Director of the Medical Imaging & Instrumentation Lab (1986-1996), and Director of Biomedical Engineering at the Behavioral Medicine Research Center (1986-1996). In 1996, he accepted his current position as Professor (Chair) of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart with appointments as Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology at the University of Miami.
He is the President of the International Union for Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine (IUPESM) and immediate past-president of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), a member of the Executive Board of the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES) and the Chairman of the Academic Division of EAMBES. Joachim Nagel is chairman of the EAMBES Committee for Education and Accreditation, and the IFMBE Publications and Publicity Committee. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the International Centre for Biocybernetics of the Polish Academy of Science, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (IOP) and a member of the UNESCO/UATI World Academy of Biomedical Technologies. He has served on the IEEE/EMBS Administrative Committee as a European and as a US representative, and he was a member of the IEEE Engineering Research & Development Committee (Technology Policy Council).
Joachim Nagel is an editor of the IOPP Book Series in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering. He has served as an Editor for the BMES journal Annals of Biomedical Engineering (1989-94), the IOPP journal Physiological Measurement (1994-98), and he was a member of numerous Editorial and Review Boards. He served as a consultant to NIH, NHLBI, the Scientists’ Institute for Public Information, the American Cancer Society – ACS/NASA Subcommittee, and numerous companies. He has been funded by NIH and the DFG, and he has taken part in EU-funded projects.
His main research interests are in the fields of cardiovascular monitoring, instrumentation and physiology, medical image acquisition and image processing, physiological signals, MEMS, neurosciences, biological effects of ultrasound, and e-health. He has published more than 180 scientific papers, books, book chapters, patents, and conference papers. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to biomedical engineering, he was recently elected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

Luís Kun is currently a Professor of Systems Management at the IRM College of the National Defense University, where he is the Course Manager for Homeland Security; Intelligent Agents and Decision Support Systems. Prior to this, he held several senior level positions in industry and government. He was the Director of Medical Systems Technology and Strategic Planning at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in LA.; the Senior IT Advisor to the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research where he formulated the IT vision and was the lead staff for HPCC program and Telehealth. He co-authored the Reports to the Congress on Telemedicine (1997) and on HIPAA Security. In July of 1997, he was invited speaker to the White House. He was largely responsible for the Telemedicine portion of the bill that became part of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Dr. Kun represented the DHHS Secretary at a Pan American Forum of Health Care Ministers on Telecommunications and the Health Care Industry in Mexico in 1997. As a Distinguished Fellow at the CDC (1999-2001) he was the Senior Computer Scientist for the Health Alert Network for Bioterrorism and later the Acting Chief Information Technology Officer for the National Immunization Program (NIP) where he formulated their IT vision.
He was an expert witness to Congress on the area of HPCC and the IEEE Health Care Engineering Policy Committee Chairman of the Electronic Medical Record and High Performance Computers and Communications Subcommittee. He served as the conference chairman of the Health Care Information Infrastructure (HCII) conference in 1995. Dr. Kun holds a BSEE; MSEE and Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering all from UCLA. Dr. Kun has made numerous seminal contributions to the information technology discipline. In March of 2003, he received the “2002 – IEEE-USA Citation of Honor Award”: “For exemplary contributions in the inception and implementation of a health care information technology vision in the United States”. Luis Kun currently serves as Chairman of the Bioterrorism & Homeland Security WG for the IEEE-USA Medical Technology Policy Committee. Dr. Kun is a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) where he serves as Chairman of the Bioterrorism R & D SWAT (Strategic Working AIMBE Team).
Dr. Kun had academic adjunct/research positions since 1980 at: UCLA School of Medicine, UT Arlington and UTSMC in Dallas; was a Senior Scientist and an Adjunct Professor of Internal Medicine at UTMB Galveston, School of Medicine, and a Research Professor of Medical Informatics and Information Technology at Rutgers University in New Jersey. In the Department of Biostatistics at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, he wrote the syllabus and taught the following courses in the new curricula of Public Health Informatics: Database Management Systems (Fall 2001) and Artificial Intelligence (Spring 2002).
In the past 25 years Dr. Kun has written a large number of articles, book chapters/sections, and is currently the Editor in Chief of the “Handbook of Biomedical Information Technology” for Elsevier. He has lectured on medical and public health informatics, information technology and biomedical engineering in over 50 countries. He is in the IEEE Computer Science Distinguished Visitor Program for both the US and Latin America (2003-2006) and is/was in the advisory board of many magazines and professional journals. He has served as an invited: Conference, track, session, tutorial, special symposia, and/or publications chair, invited speaker / keynote speaker and in conference scientific committees, etc. over 150 times.

Mr. Popovich is founder and President/CEO of Scientific Technologies Corporation a public health professional services and informatics company with offices throughout the U.S. Mr. Popovich graduated in 1973 with a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona and with a B.S. in Engineering Mathematics and a minor in Physics. He has been listed in Who’s Who Worldwide Platinum edition, received numerous awards, authored over 120 articles and papers and is a regular invited guest speaker at national conferences.
His vision is to advance public health practice through information technology. He has become a leading specialist in strategic planning and in implementing successful public health information systems, notably, emergency preparedness through integration of systems for early warning, disease reporting and population based registries. He has developed and implemented risk assessment models using GIS and public health programmatic data sources as well as developed strategies for public health practitioners to collaborate with private health professionals to increase information sharing. His public health work with local, state, national and international organizations includes projects for maternal and child health, communicable and chronic diseases, school and behavioral health. He has been an invited expert at the Centers of Disease Prevention to identify standards for vaccine preventable tracking systems as well as provided expertise to non-profit public health organizations such as RWJ/All Kids Count and the Flinn Foundation.
His past experience includes such diverse projects as development of satellite simulation and electronic warfare modeling for the U.S. Air Force to design of environmental health tracking systems for the Bermuda Ministry of Health. He has designed, developed and applied computer models to simulate air, noise and water pollution for planning transit and transportation projects as well as serving the onsite software engineer in Central America developing economic and transpiration forecasting systems for the Nicaraguan Government.

Andrew J. Marsh obtained a MSc. in Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems (1987) and a Ph.D. in Computer Science (1990) from the University of Essex (UK) where he worked from 1990-1994 as a senior research officer.
From 1994, Andrew Marsh has was employed by the ICCS-NTUA (GR) as an HPCN consultant and European projects manager. In 1996-1998 he was the project manager of the EC funded project called EUROMED (2 MECU) that proposed a web-based standard for telemedicine, called VMW.
Andrew Marsh has over 160 scientific publications including 4 books and from 1996-1998 was a visiting professor at the University of Calabria (IT). He is on a number of journal editorial boards, the founder and editor-in-chief for the Journal of ITIS letters, the founder of the ITIS conference and the VMW Magazine where he is chairman of the advisory committee. Andrew Marsh is an expert evaluator and project reviewer for the European Commission and consultant for the ESA.

Denis Carroll is a qualified electronics engineer with national and international consultancy experience in communications, healthcare information systems and computing.
He is head of Knowledge Transfer Partnership Unit, University of Westminster, current activities include working with intermediary organisations, facilitating/brokering technology transfer in the areas of computer science, finance/management, bioscience, complementary healthcare and the setting up of spin-out companies. And he is project manager within the Health & Social Care Modelling Group. The contract value of these activities is over £1.3 million in the last 6 years.
Principle specialist area is healthcare ICT working within NHS Trust hospitals (acute and community) and primary care groups. He is currently a member of IEE, IEEE, CMI and joint author of “Time for a new approach to natural medicines risk management”, Journal for Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 2003. During 2002 he was seconded to NHS as project manager of £1.2m to create a digital interactive television pilot running over Sky’s infrastructure and is NHS approved via Centre for Health Information Quality for the dissemination of patient care information.

Dr Fisher is a UK physician who is currently an independant consultant in healthcare ethics . Five years in general practice (including 2 years for the RAF) led to specialising in family planning. Her career included senior positions in clinical practice, NHS general management (of a community and mental health unit), and medical politics. She was Head of Ethics Science and Information at the British Medical Association, their media spokesman on these topics and fronted the BMA’s campaign on confidentiality of identifiable health data . She continues to campaign actively and speak widely on medical privacy. She recently retired after 12 years as a trustee and Vice Chair of the International HIV/AIDs Alliance and remains Trustee of the Medical Foundation for AIDS and Sexual Health, the Foundation for Information Policy Research, Director of Action on Rights for Children and member of the British Computer Society’s Information Privacy Expert Panel and Primary Healthcare Specialist Group Committee.She is the independent Chair of the publishing industry’s self-regulatory Teenage Magazine Arbitration Panel and a member if the University of Westminster’s Research Ethics Committee.
She was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Westminster in 2001.

Professor Yogesan is Research Director at the Australian e-Health Research Centre (CSIRO).
Professor Yogesan was Foundation Chair and Professor in e-Medicine and the Managing Director of the Centre of Excellence in e-Medicine in Australia. This is the only such Centre of Excellence in Asia and Pacific Region established in collaboration with the Government, Edith Cowan University and University of Western Australia.
Professor Yogesan is also a Senior Research Fellow of the National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia.
He was appointed President of the Australasian Telehealth Society in 2008.
He has published over 85 peer-reviewed research papers in the field, and has been awarded more than $20 million in funding from various sources. He has strong record in translation of research findings into clinical practice. Prof. Yogesan has obtained 6 patents in the fields of ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dentistry and dermatology, which attest to his multidisciplinary expertise. He has developed “unique” low-cost, easy-to-operate miniaturised diagnostic devices, online clinical training programs and diagnostic systems. Some of these technologies have rolled out to clinicians. He has introduced new digital technologies into rural eye screenings which can be operated by nurses and screened more than 5000 people in rural and remote WA for blinding eye conditions.
He is a member of the American Telemedicine Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, IEEE Computer Society, SPIE and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Society for Telemedicine and e-Health. His multi-disciplinary expertise extends from medicine, e-medicine, electronic engineering, and biomedical engineering to computer science.

Hermie J Hermens did his master in biomedical engineering at the University of Twente. His PhD was on Surface Electromyography. At present he is Professor at the University of Twente in neuromuscular control of human movement and Cluster manager non-invasive assessment of motor functions at Roessingh Research and Development, a private research institute in the area of rehabilitation medicine and technology.
Relevant other professional functions include: President (2002-2004) and fellow (2006-) of the Int. Society for Electromyography and Kinesiology, Editor in chief Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation (2002-) and Chairman of the Medical Ethical Committee of Het Roessingh (2000-2005). Recently he became coordinator of the biomedical master track Telemedicine and Telecare, combining biomedical engineering and Information and Communication Technology.
Hermens is (Co)-author of more then 90 peer reviewed publications in international scientific journals. He coordinated three European projects (CREST, SENIAM and Impulse) and participated in 15 other European projects. At national level he was coordinator of the ICT project ExoZorg and is participating in several other projects aiming at remote monitoring of patients at risk and remotely supervised training.

Graeme Catto is President of the General Medical Council and Professor of Medicine, University of Aberdeen. Until 2005, he was Vice-Principal at King’s College London, Dean of the Guy’s, King’s College and St. Thomas’ Hospitals’ Medical & Dental School and Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of London. After graduating in Medicine, he obtained a Harkness Fellowship to study at Harvard University. He is an honorary physician with an interest in renal medicine and has published widely on different aspects of nephrology and immunology. Formerly Chief Scientist at the Scottish Executive Health Department and Governor of the Science Technology Park in Qatar, he is currently a member of the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence and the Scottish Stem Cell Network.
Married to a lawyer, Graeme Catto has two children, four grandchildren and an English setter. He enjoys the hills and glens of Scotland.

After a research assignment at the French National Centre for Scientific Research, joins the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) (HQ in Paris). He held several positions, in particular Director of the Bioethics Programme, Senior Director of the Division of the Ethics of Science and Technology, Secretary-General of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) and Executive Secretary of the World Commission of the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST). He was also the Rapporteur of the IBC Drafting Group of the International Declaration on Human Genetic Data (adopted in 2003).
Presently he is Mediator at UNESCO. He is the Co-Chair of the Ethics Committee of the World Academy of Biomedical Technologies (WABT) and member of the Scientific Committee of the International Society of Bioethics (SIBI).
Since 1996, he teaches a Master’s seminar in bioethics and biotechnologies (University of Paris-South, University of Versailles and University of Paris XII).
He is the author of several articles, essays, reports and publications on social anthropology, human rights issues, bioethics and the ethics of science.

Iddo Bante (29-3-1960) is business director at the CTIT (Centre for Telematics and Information Technology) of the University of Twente in the Netherlands. CTIT is one of the largest academic IT research institutes in Europe with over 475 researchers. Integration of IT research and its application in specific domains is a clear focus of the CTIT. Healthcare, safety, mobility, logistics and energy are the main application domains. In this capacity, Iddo oversees CTIT’s extensive international network of research institutes, universities, healthcare providers, governmental organizations, financial institutes and industrial partners. As member of the Innovation Lab Twente, Iddo is heavily involved in the creation of high-tech spin-off companies via the CTIT Smart Systems Business Accelerator and the Business Incubator TOP.
Iddo serves on the board of Technology Circle Twente, a network of 180 high-tech, small-medium sized enterprises. Members of this high-tech palette of Twente are involved in (product-) development work and often bridge the gap between university and industry. Member firms cover an enormous range of technologies and a string of breakthrough products has been realized. Iddo is also Board Member of the European Foundation for Controlled Drug Delivery, board member of the foundation Twente Broadband, member of the Twente Taskforce Health & Technology, and member of several steering committees of research and/or implementation projects.
Prior to this position, Iddo was business director of the Institute for Biomedical Technology of the University of Twente. During this period, he coordinated several large European research networks with participants from universities, industry and healthcare organizations, such as ARNESCO (10 participants in 7 EU states), NEUROS (10 participants in 8 EU states) and neuralPRO (11 participants in 7 European countries). He also served as coordinator at the Centre for Homecare and Rehabilitation and Innovative Entrepreneurship and was a member of the Management Team at the Centre for Rehabilitation Technology.
Iddo has an industrial background and worked with the Dutch multinational firm DSM as leader of the agro-biotechnology research group from 1987 to 1990. In 1990, Iddo moved to the business development department of DSM Special Products business unit, with the pharmaceutical sector as his main application domain. Apart from above mentioned main jobs, Iddo was co-founder of two SME’s.
Iddo has a master’s degree in Molecular Genetics with a minor in bioprocess technology and biochemistry from the Free University of Amsterdam (the Netherlands). His research work resulted in a patent application by the Unilever Research Laboratory.
