Science on ICMCC

Some history

Originally the ICMCC Website was a conference site, but in 2006 we decided to build a small example of what an internet knowledge center could look like. It became the ICMCC Record Access Portal, still unique on the web.
Early 2007 I started adding some news items to the site, very primitive and maybe more meant as a therapy recovering from chemotherapy than as a real information source.

But somewhat unexpectedly, the ICMCC News Page has become the most important feature of the ICMCC website. The statistics show, that we had for the whole of the month of January 2007 less visitors than we now have per day.

Good News

This month of March will be a month with exciting announcements. The call for participation for our 2010 Event will go out, as will the call for chapters for our 2nd Digital Homecare book.
But right now I would like to introduce our new Science Pages. For months we have been working on creating a unique bibliographic site for articles on medical and care compunetics, i.e. the social, societal and ethical aspects of the use of computing and networking in medicine and care.

At the moment of launching, 7 March 2010, our database contains links to almost 1200 scientific articles. The ICMCC Science Pages give you:

  • abstract of the article
  • links to the original abstract/article and to the journal volume
  • all bibliographic data (including full citation)
  • links to other articles from the authors (if in ICMCC database)
  • links to other articles from involved academic institutes (if in ICMCC database)
  • links to PubMed and Google Scholar for each author
  • inventory of involved academic institutes
  • indices on author, first author, article title, publication date, journal, academic institutes
  • possibility to discuss the issues covered in the article

The ICMCC Science Pages are the most comprehensive in its kind on the web. Enjoy this experience for free for a limited time.

Support

As I mentioned earlier, the ICMCC website has rapidly become popular and is now one of the leading sources on news and science in medical and care compunetics. During the first 2 months of 2010 we had 1,097,054 pageviews, made during 386,327 visits by 20,716 unique visitors.

Keeping this site up-to-date both technical and content-wise has become a full time job. As a foundation ICMCC does not have members, nor do we receive any sponsoring (except sometimes for our annual event), thus maintaining our independent position as an organisation. Therefore we had to find other ways to finance this site.

From 1 April 2010 we will ask from our readers a small contribution ($25 per year). From that date on, the “more” links on the News Page, the Science Pages and the Record Access Portal can only be used by our supporters. We hope that this will also enable us to actively gather more international information.

And I do hope that you, our visitor, will understand this decision.

  1. I’m impressed, I need to say. Really not often do I encounter a weblog that’s each educative and entertaining, and let me inform you, you might have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the difficulty is something that not enough persons are talking intelligently about. I am very glad that I stumbled throughout this in my search for something referring to this.
