Touchscreens, tablets and other mobile technologies already were known to interest autistic children, but researchers say FindMe is the first game to directly engage their specific learning style, and use that engagement to build social skills.

This paper focuses on accessing the experiences of three boys who are on the autism spectrum to identify what using a voice output communication aid (VOCA), within a classroom setting, means to them. The methods used to identify the boys’ perspectives are described and evaluated. Establishing these through direct methods of engagement proved problematic but working with parents and school staff as ‘expert guides’ provided a rich insight into what using a VOCA appeared to mean to the boys.

We started talking about tablets and touch computing and one of the HP employees in attendance told us about a very innovative school in Silicon Valley. Hope Technology school is using TouchSmart PCs and other to help autistic children speak for the first time. One student was unable to express himself for the first 14 years of his life, but can now string together sentences after six weeks of practice.”
