Assessing Vaccination Sentiments with Online Social Media: Implications for Infectious Disease Dynamics and Control

Salathé M, Khandelwal S. PLoS Comput Biol, 7(10)

There is great interest in the dynamics of health behaviors in social networks and how they affect collective public health outcomes, but measuring population health behaviors over time and space requires substantial resources. Here, we use publicly available data from 101,853 users of online social media collected over a time period of almost six months to measure the spatio-temporal sentiment towards a new vaccine. We validated our approach by identifying a strong correlation between sentiments expressed online and CDC-estimated vaccination rates by region.

Can EHRs Impact the Actual Causes of Death in the US?

Robert Rowley, EHR Bloggers

“The leading causes of death in the U.S., based on data from the year 2000 – heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lung disease, etc. – are actually surrogates for what has been called the actual causes of death – unhealthy behaviors such as tobacco use, poor diet and physical inactivity. A recent blog piece underscored this point quite nicely.

Home blood pressure management and improved blood pressure control: results from a randomized controlled trial

Bosworth HB et al, Archives of Internal Medicine, 171(13)

BACKGROUND
To determine which of 3 interventions was most effective in improving blood pressure (BP) control, we performed a 4-arm randomized trial with 18-month follow-up at the primary care clinics at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

METHODS
Eligible patients were randomized to either usual care or 1 of 3 telephone-based intervention groups: (1) nurse-administered behavioral management, (2) nurse- and physician-administered medication management, or (3) a combination of both. Of the 1551 eligible patients, 593 individuals were randomized; 48% were African American. The intervention telephone calls were triggered based on home BP values transmitted via telemonitoring devices. Behavioral management involved promotion of health behaviors. Medication management involved adjustment of medications by a study physician and nurse based on hypertension treatment guidelines.

Let’s Be Honest: EMRs Will Change Who Doctors Are

Katherine Rourke, EMR and EHR

“The current narrative suggests that doctors who won’t buy in to the EMR movement are buggy-whip makers, too. They’re, let me see now, uncooperative, stubborn, inflexible, timid, recalcitrant, defiant…got any more? Clearly, any doctor who’s being dragged kicking and screaming into digital medicine is an old fogey or an arrogant type who deserves to be put into their place. Right?

Infodemiology and infoveillance tracking online health information and cyberbehavior for public health

Eysenbach G. American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 40(5 Suppl 2)

Infodemiology, an emerging area of research at the crossroads of consumer health informatics and public health informatics, as well as infometrics and web analytics tools, can be defined as the science of distribution and determinants of information in an electronic medium, specifically the Internet, with the ultimate aim to inform public health and public policy. Infodemiology data (derived from unstructured, textual, openly accessible information produced and consumed by the public on the Internet, such as blogs, websites, and query and navigation data) can be collected and analyzed in near real-time.

Juzang I et al, J Telemed Telecare, 17(3)

We explored the feasibility of engaging young black men in a 12-week text messaging programme about HIV prevention. There were two non-randomized groups of 30 young men each. The participants were aged 16-20 years, self-identifying as black or African-American, sexually active, who owned a mobile phone and lived in Philadelphia. They received three text messages per week for 12 weeks. People in the intervention group received text messages about HIV prevention, while those in the control group received text messages about nutrition.

Interactive Games to Promote Behavior Change in Prevention and Treatment

Read JL, Shortell SM. JAMA, 2011

Anyone who has observed someone deeply absorbed in a video game can appreciate that use of these games is a uniquely powerful interaction. For the player, time stands still and self-consciousness disappears. Csikszentmihalyi described this state as “flow.” His concept was exemplified by mountain climbers living in the moment of ascent or surgeons lost in a delicate and demanding task. He could just as well have been describing what happens when individuals engage with some of today’s interactive games.

How patients use access to their electronic GP record–a quantitative study

Bhavnani V et al, Family Practice, 28(2)

BACKGROUND
Record access is likely to become an integral part of routine care in the UK. While existing research suggests that record access improves self-care and improves relationships between patients and clinicians, little is known about how patients make use of their ability to access their records or the impact that this has on health behaviour.

AIM
To explore patients’ use of access to their electronic GP record and the impact of that process on their health behaviour.

Evaluation of a telemedicine system for heart failure patients: Feasibility, acceptance rate, satisfaction and changes in patient behavior Results from the CARME (CAtalan Remote Management Evaluation) study

Domingo M et al, European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, 2011

BACKGROUND:
Telemedicine can be useful for managing heart failure (HF), but patient acceptance of telemedicine and its impact on patient behavior are unclear. AIMS: To assess a telemedicine program in a HF Unit.

METHODS AND RESULTS:
This sub-analysis of the CARME study assessed the use of an interactive telemedicine platform. This prospective intervention study had a before/after design with HF patients randomized 1:1 into two groups: A) Motiva system (educational videos, motivational messages, and questionnaires); and B) Motiva system+telemonitoring of blood pressure, heart rate and weight. Of 211 patients screened, 44 were excluded, 62 did not consent to participate and 8 withdrew consent prior to installation of the system.
