“Just like “the cloud” of 2009 and 2010, this year’s red-hot buzz term bandied about by executives who may or may not have clue what it means is ‘big data.’ But just as 2011 saw the world wrap its head around the cloud, the time is coming when technology around big data will gain traction, understanding and deployments.

“The second year of a benchmark survey to track progress in securing protected health information finds improved policies and staff training, but also increased frequency of breaches, rising incidents of identity theft, poor control over mobile devices, and two-thirds of organizations don’t provide protection services for breach victims.

“Data security is becoming a growing concern for healthcare organizations, and for good reason. Many CIOs now list it as one of their biggest concerns. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ recent annual report on data breaches, 207 breaches involving 500 or more individuals occurred in 2010, and these breaches affected more than 5.4 million individuals. Furthermore, it seems that prestigious organizations are no more immune from data loss as are lesser-known facilities.

The introduction of an electronic health record (ELGA) is a subject discussed for a long time in Austria. Another big step toward ELGA is made at the end of 2010 on the pilot project e-medication in three model regions; other projects should follow. In addition, projects of the ELGA structure are sped up on the part of the ELGA GmbH to install the base of a functioning electronic health record.

“There’s a lot of talk about the risks of storing health information in electronic medical records (EMRs). But, EMRs aren’t the problem. Those consent forms you sign at the doctor’s office… yeah, you should pay attention to the fine print. You may be giving permission to insurance companies, drug makers, and data aggregators to access your health information, regardless of how or where it’s stored.
