“While the implementation of health information technology (HIT) systems in medical practices has the potential of improving healthcare efficiency and patient care, there are obstacles that medical practices must overcome, and those problems are especially acute for small practices such as those operated by many dermatologists.

“In the past, when family physician Positron Kebebew M.D., M.P.H., needed to send patients from her federally qualified health center in Santa Monica, Calif., to a dermatologist, her only option was to refer them to the county hospital, where a patient with a potentially serious condition could face a wait of nine months or more for an appointment.

Optimal management of atopic dermatitis (AD) requires patients to adhere to self-care behaviors. Technologies, such as cell phones, have been widely adopted in the USA and have potential to reinforce positive health behaviors. We conducted a pilot study with 25 adolescents and adults age 14 years and older [mean 30.5 yrs, SD 13.4] with AD. Daily text messages (TMs) that provided medication reminders and AD education were sent for six weeks to participants.

Objective:
Store-and-forward (S&F) teledermatology has been used to increase patient access to dermatologic care. A major challenge to implementing S&F teledermatology is selecting secure and cost-saving applications for data capture and transmission. Detailed analyses and comparison of the major S&F teledermatology applications do not exist in the current peer-reviewed literature. The objectives of this study were to identify, evaluate, and compare the major S&F teledermatology applications in the United States to help referral and consultant sites select applications responsive to their needs.

“We’ve been fans of the concept of the e-visit for a long time. And though some of the concerns from the medical establishment are warranted–it’s tough to know the nuances of a case without a pre-existing relationship with a patient, physicians aren’t often reimbursed for their time, there isn’t enough scientific evidence to show e-visits are effective–much of the negativity likely was due to simple reluctance to change.
