Health behavior models in the age of mobile interventions: are our theories up to the task?

Riley WT et al, Translational Behavioral Medicine, 2011

Mobile technologies are being used to deliver health behavior interventions. The study aims to determine how health behavior theories are applied to mobile interventions. This is a review of the theoretical basis and interactivity of mobile health behavior interventions. Many of the mobile health behavior interventions reviewed were predominately one way (i.e., mostly data input or informational output), but some have leveraged mobile technologies to provide just-in-time, interactive, and adaptive interventions.

A Novel Handheld Device for Use in Remote Patient Monitoring of Heart Failure Patients—Design and Preliminary Validation on Healthy Subjects

Pollonini L et al, Journal of Medical Systems, 2010

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) holds great promise for reducing the burden of congestive heart failure (CHF). Improved sensor technology and effective predictive algorithms can anticipate sudden decompensation events. Enhanced telemonitoring systems would promote patient independence and facilitate communication between patients and their physicians. We report the development of a novel hand-held device, called Blue Box, capable of collecting and wirelessly transmitting key cardiac parameters derived from three integrated biosensors: 2 lead electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmography and bioelectrical impedance (bioimpedance).

Mobile Real-Time Data Acquisition System for Application in Preventive Medicine

Neubert S et al, Telemedicine and e-Health, 2010

In this article, the development of a system for online monitoring of a subject’s physiological parameters and subjective workload regardless of location has been presented, which allows for studies on occupational health. In the sector of occupational health, modern acquisition systems are needed. Such systems can be used by the subject during usual daily routines without being influenced by the presence of an examiner. Moreover, the system’s influence on the subject should be reduced to a minimum to receive reliable data from the examination. The acquisition system is based on a mobile handheld (or smart phone), which allows both management of the communication process and input of several dialog data (e.g., questionnaires).
