Government EHR Program: Potentially Harmful Unintended Consequences

“I am really intrigued by the latest creation from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Last week, HHS announced a contract to set up a group of experts to identify and attempt to fix any “undesirable” and “potentially harmful unintended consequences” that result from the stimulus legislation’s EHR incentives. According to the announcement, which was posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website: “Historical experience, as well as mounting evidence of unexpected problems, demands that we consider potential downsides.”

Orthopedic clinic replaces EMR with SRS’ hybrid model

“SRSsoft is touting its latest contract as proof that not all electronic medical record solutions are created equally.
The Montvale, N.J.-based developer of a “hybrid EMR” has signed a contract with the Southeastern Orthopedic Center and Tattnall Hospital Company, which operates a hospital, 15 physician offices, an ambulatory surgery center and physical therapy and imaging services in southeastern Georgia, to replace its current EMR.

Hybrid health records; combining paper and digital medical charting

“Today we had our training in the new, read-only hospital records system. We use something called PowerChart which is employed in almost all of the hospitals run by the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA). Various sub-programs are used to input pathology info, lab values, medical imaging reports and transcribed patient encounters.
