Two-Way Flow of Data Best for Electronic Records, IIS

DoctorsLounge

“Incentive payments to health care providers to encourage adoption of the electronic health record (EHR), instituted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), should encourage bidirectional sharing of information between EHR systems and state or regional immunization information systems (IIS), according to research published online Feb. 7 in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Reminders for Children with High-Risk Conditions

Dombkowski KJ et al, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 42(1)

Background
Children with chronic conditions have an increased risk of complications from influenza and have low influenza vaccination rates.

Purpose
To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of using a statewide immunization information system (IIS) for seasonal influenza vaccine reminders from local health departments (LHDs) targeting children with high-risk conditions.

Empowering Individuals through their Immunization Records

Michael L. Popovich, Deborah Allwes, STC

“Despite the promise of better healthcare through information-centric patient empowerment, little progress has been made. The issue is not that the data do not exist in a useable form, or that technologies that would enable access to this information are lacking. There are two primary challenges standing in the way of patient empowerment: (1) in the private sector there is no proven revenue model for providing this access, and (2) in the public sector the standard barrier is confidentiality of information, the possibility of misinterpretation, and existing policies.

Physician Impressions of Using Text Message Technology to Increase Vaccination Compliance

Hart T et al, Telemedicine and e-Health, 17(6)

Introduction:
Immunization schedules are complicated and difficult for parents to remember. Parents are willing to receive text message reminders. However, it is unknown whether physicians are willing to implement such a system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a text messaging reminder system from the physician’s perspective.

Materials and Methods:
Surveys were distributed in the winter of 2009–2010 by e-mail, facsimile, and telephone interview to 149 family physicians and pediatricians who provide immunizations in Sedgwick County, Kansas.

Content of text messaging immunization reminders: What low-income parents want to know

Ahlers-Schmidt CR et al, Patient Education and Counseling, 2010

OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of this project was to gather preliminary data on preferred content for text reminders sent to low-income parents.

METHODS:
A brief, IRB-approved survey was administered to 200 consecutive English-speaking parents of children under 6 years old at a Pediatric Residency clinic. Because text messages can hold only limited content, parents were given three example texts ranging from very basic to very specific information and asked to select the information they would wish to receive.

Pediatric EMRs Getting Their Fair Share of the HIT Spotlight

Jennifer Dennard, Healthcare IT News

“I was pleasantly surprised a few weeks ago when I walked into the office of my daughter’s pediatrician and saw a computer monitor and keyboard ready to be unwrapped and plugged in – presumably to an electronic medical record. Perhaps by our next visit, the doctor would already be familiar with my daughter’s trip to the emergency room in another town, and the results of a visit to a specialist a few weeks later.

Immunization Information Systems (IIS) and Health Information Exchanges (HIE) are at a Turning Point in Regards to Interoperability

Mike Popovich, STC

“As health information technology evolves in the era of meaningful use, state HIE’s and IIS’s are working together on best practices to achieve interoperability. HIE’s can become the primary access point for all healthcare data within a state and many states are aggressively positioning their HIE’s for future use. HIE’s must also adhere to Meaningful Use, which potentially creates a tremendous amount of value to state IIS’s – if deployed properly.

Interoperability Benefits Immunization Information System and Provider EHRs When Monitored and Managed

Mike Popovich, STC

“Interoperability, as defined by www.Webster-dictionary.org is “the ability to exchange and use information…” Interoperability as applied to immunization record exchange between electronic health record (EHR) systems and statewide immunization information systems (IIS) means the ability to share patient immunization records electronically through HL7 standard communication protocols.

Impact of clinical alerts within an electronic health record on routine childhood immunization in an urban pediatric population

Fiks AG et al, Pediatrics, 120(4)

OBJECTIVES.
The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that clinical alerts for routine pediatric vaccinations within an electronic health record would reduce missed opportunities for vaccination and improve immunization rates for young children in an inner-city population.

METHODS.
A 1-year intervention study (September 1, 2004, to August 31, 2005) with historical controls was conducted in 4 urban primary care centers affiliated with an academic medical center. All children who were younger than 24 months were enrolled. Electronic health record–based clinical reminders for routine childhood vaccinations were programmed to appear prominently at every patient encounter with vaccines due. The main outcome measures were rates of captured immunization opportunities and overall immunization rates at 24 months of age.

EHR “measurable benefits” – What it means to Immunization Information Systems

Janet Balog, STC

“In a March 8 briefing sponsored by Health Affairs journal, Dr. David Blumenthal, the national coordinator for health IT announced its latest published studies on the impact that electronic health records (EHR) have on patient outcomes. The survey found evidence of “emerging measurable benefits” for small practices in addition to the larger health IT leaders.
