Chris Taylor, The Successful Workplace

“There are real challenges with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) beyond getting doctors to write things down (a feat in itself). Healthcare providers are being pushed to adopt EMR, but few are at Stage 7, shown at right.

Translating standards into practice: Experience and lessons learned at the Department of Veterans Affairs

Bouhaddou O et al, Journal of Biomedical Informatics, 2012

The increased need for interoperable electronic health records in health care organizations underscores the importance of standards. The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has a long history of developing and adopting various types of health care data standards. The authors present in detail their experience in this domain. A formal organization within VA is responsible for helping to develop and implement standards. This group has produced a Standards Life Cycle (SLC) process endorsed by VA key business and information technology (IT) stakeholders. It coordinates the identification, description, and implementation of standards aligned with VA business requirements.

The Reluctant Doctor: Realizing the Benefits of an EHR

Jennifer Dennard, EMR and EHR

“One foggy morning last week, I made my way to the Georgia State Capitol for a Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) Health event relating to the intersection of healthcare IT and state legislation. Little did I know that the state’s government is somewhat unaware of the benefits HIT can bring, both to the patient in terms of more coordinated care and improved quality outcomes, and to the state in terms of job creation and revenue.

How adopting an EHR is like treating cancer

Margalit Gur-Arie, KevinMD

“EHRs are not ready for prime time. EHR benefits are questionable and there are documented instances where patients’ deaths were directly attributed to an EHR. EHRs are cumbersome and slow. They are unnecessarily complex and built on very old technology. The people who build EHRs have no concern for the end user and therefore EHR usability is pretty abysmal. And EHRs are expensive to buy and expensive to maintain, not to mention that they can completely derail your practice through loss of productivity.

With EHRs, When Seeking Clarity, Begin at the Beginning

Daniel Essin, Physicians Practice

“People have been so anxious to apply computers to healthcare that they have overlooked Lewis Carroll’s sage advice: Begin at the beginning. The problem of losing one’s way as a result of beginning in the middle of a problem is not unique to EHRs as we are reminded by Tim O’Reilly, a publisher of computer-related books and a technology pundit.

PCEHR glitch: no lynch mobs please

Charles Wright, eHealthCentral

“It took a couple of days for The Australian and the usual suspects to catch up with the news of the problems with the specifications for the PCEHR which I reported on Sunday and again yesterday, which may explain the enthusiasm with which they have greeted confirmation of the story in a statement from NEHTA.
