Computer technology can cut into personalized patient care

“It has been correctly said, “To err is human, but to really mess up requires a computer.” Another saying goes: “If it wasn’t documented, it wasn’t done.”
Gone are the days of business on a handshake. Discussing computers and documentation in a medical column may be a bit odd, but bear with me. It is highly relevant.
As an “insider” in the field of medicine, I see things the public does not. Many actions that directly affect the quality of care you receive as a patient go unappreciated because they are behind the scenes. During my 30-plus years in medicine I have seen monumental shifts in the way care is delivered. Most changes have been beneficial, some questionable and a few unequivocally detrimental.”
