Certifying PHRs

“The first set of certification criteria for personal health records (PHRs) products will focus more on privacy, security, and interoperability with other health-IT and less on specific functionality in an effort to foster innovation in a relatively new market segment, according to the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT).”

CCHIT readies personal health record testing

“The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology is developing draft criteria for testing personal health records systems and aims to launch a certification program in July 2009.
Personal health records, or PHRs, let consumers maintain health records in one place as opposed to having them scattered across multiple doctors’ offices, hospitals, pharmacies and health plans. PHRs can also provide emergency access to health records that can help save lives and reduce the possibility of medical errors.”

CCHIT Certification and HIE Transactions – The Process and What It Means

“As we have all heard in the certification processes for medical records, the goals to achieve are getting a little tougher, just like designing the software is.  Also note the cost of the transaction, 10k, so it is not inexpensive and the EHR software companies have to not only prepare, but bankroll for the cost as well.”

PHR Certification Looking for Input

“Now, I am no fan of the whole CCHIT initiative to develop a certification process for PHRs as this market is far too immature. But continue on they do and whether I like it or not matters little for the simple fact that a gargantuan organization representing millions, (hint their acronym is CMS) will demand that any PHR they push to their constiuents have such certification. At this point about the only thing I can hope for is that the group in charge with creating the standards for certification keep it loose and not too prescriptive.”

I encourage everyone to get involved.”

Providers should heed EHR certification guides: NQF

“The National Quality Forum is recommending healthcare providers follow established certification guidelines for electronic health records and patient information reporting protocol under proposed information technology structural measures.
Providers should use EHRs certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, or in absence of that, EHR capabilities defined by the Health Level 7 functional model, the NQF suggested in its draft report. Members have until Aug. 1 to vote on the report. The NQF board still has to approve the final measures.”

New project encourages use of electronic medical records

“You trust doctors to figure out what’s wrong with you, but they trust you to remember your immunizations, allergies, medications, parents’ health histories and other bits of information that may or may not matter. Or they trust scribbled notations in a paper medical file that they might not have in hand when they need it. As a result, you might not receive the care you need.”

Patient security still relies on common sense

“Sometimes, security can be as simple as a screen saver.
For health care workers across the country, electronic patient records are becoming a more popular way to supplement or even replace racks of paper patient files. Entering data into a software program may be faster and easier than handwriting or typing up notes for a traditional chart, and electronic records may lend themselves to better organization by cutting down on paper clutter.”
