“The Internet must be an essential tool for pharmaceutical companies trying to recruit patients for clinical trials, concludes a new report from a British-based market analysis firm.
The report, the latest in the “eHealthInsight Series” from Datamonitor, notes that an increasing number of pharmaceutical companies are using the Internet at all stages of the clinical trial process, including patient recruitment and retention, to overcome delays that harm profits.”

“The nation’s two electronic prescription networks plan to announce today that they are merging in an effort to encourage the adoption of their technology by doctors and patients.
Alexandria-based SureScripts and St. Paul, Minn.-based RxHub are extensions of different parts of the pharmaceutical industry. SureScripts is owned by retail and independent pharmacies; RxHub is owned by three major drug benefit managers, which are also mail-order pharmacies. The companies say they hope the broader use of the technology will cut down on costs and medical mistakes.”

The advances are linked to the mapping of genetic code and the relative ease and speed electronic data provides for analyzing and sharing research.”

“The market for Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID, applications in pharmaceuticals is conservatively estimated to reach $600 million by 2012 with a compound annual growth rate of 60 percent, according to a new market research study.
One quarter of the major pharmaceutical companies are expected to implement large-scale RFID projects to reduce costs, improve inventory control, track clinical trials and manage samples, claim the authors of “RFID in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing,” a study by the market research firm Kalorama Information.”

“This is the latest version of Big Pharma’s experiment to figure out how to replace the incredibly inefficient way it researches, sells to and communicates with doctors. The very baby steps of starting to cut those detail forces are just starting to be taken, but while those empires slowly get dismantled over the coming decade(s), something needs to be put into its place. eDetailing via video has been a bust so far, and putting those hot cheerleaders into the doctor’s office is getting more and more expensive.”
