SCM Microsystems Introduces New Mobile Terminal for the German Electronic Health Card

“The eHealth500 mobile terminal allows physicians and physiotherapists to access patient insurance and medical data during home visits, in nursing homes and retirement homes, as well as in emergency situations within or outside of hospitals. The terminals are able to read both the health insurance cards currently in use in Germany as well as the new electronic cards scheduled to be issued to 82 million German citizens beginning later this year. The devices can also read the health professional cards (HPC) issued to authenticate doctors and other health professionals, which, when inserted, allow doctors to access emergency information that may be stored on patients’ electronic health cards and to temporarily store case notes for later transfer to their office networks. These mobile functions complement the desktop terminals that are expected to be installed in every physician’s office, pharmacy, clinic and hospital.”

Gesundheitskarte: Erstes Terminal zugelassen, Rollout gestoppt

Improving health care with a card

“Many people can’t imagine banking without an ATM card to grab cash and the Internet to pay bills. And millions of travelers head straight for the electronic check-in kiosk when they get to the airport.

Hospitals are Getting ‘Smart’ About Patient Data

“Patients at Mount Sinai Medical Center are able to carry their medical records in their wallets, thanks to new “smart” identification cards the hospital is distributing.
Each card, which is the size and shape of a credit card, features a digital image of the patient and contains a computer chip that is capable of storing 33 pages of data. Designed to help the hospital correctly identify patients, the cards also consolidate each patient’s medical history, which can be accessed anywhere in the hospital — from its outpatient clinics to the emergency room.”

UK Patients Accessing Records with E-cards

“Westover Medical, a chain of primary healthcare clinics based in the United Kingdom, is launching an electronic card that patients can use to access their medical history.
Members of Westover can access their personal data by connecting the card to any computer and going through the provider’s secure website. Records will be password protected, and no data will be saved locally on the computer through which they are accessed, which the company says will help ensure patient confidentiality.
Westover is the first private healthcare provider in the UK to offer the e-card to its customers.”

Ärzte lehnen Einführung der elektronischen Gesundheitskarte ab

German doctors reject health card.
